21,600 ltrs ‘lahan’ recovered in joint operation of Excise and police teams
Ferozepur, January 9, 2021: In two separate joint operations by Excise and Police teams, 21,600 ltrs ‘lahan’ – kachhi daaru, has been recovered and destroyed on the spot to avoid its misuse at Chandiwala village and in the enclaves of confluences of Sutlej and Beas at Hari Ke.
It is added here that during 2020, the excise authorities have cracked more than 21 lakh ltrs illicit liquor was recovered in 492 raids.
Giving this information, police and excise officials said, working on the tip-off that Gurmukh Singh, Gurcharan Singh and Kikkar Singh of Sina Ke Jughe village taking the advantage of standing reeds – tall plants that grow in shallow water or wet grounds – ‘sarkandas’, are extracting the illicit liquor and lying in huge quantity in plastic tarpaulins on the banks of Sutlej River near Chandiwala village. On conducting the raid, 16,000 lit lahan was recovered. In another raid, 4,600 ltrs lahan was recovered from at Harike by the police and excise teams along with the material – 4 plastic tarpaulins and 3 iron drums – used for brewing the illicit liquor, which was taken into custody.
In both cases, no arrest could be made, as the accused fled away from the scene on seeing the police teams. However, a police case has been registered under the Excise Act.
