Unmanned Railway Crossings – DRM appeals to be cautious while crossing
Ferozepur July 25, 2016: To reduce the graph of deaths at the unmanned railway crossing, which is serious cause of concern, the railway have started a special awareness campaign.
Divulging with the details, Anuj Parkash, Divisional Rail Manager Ferozepur Division said, Ferozepur is the biggest division of railways. There are around 1024 gates, out of which 721 are manned and 321 are unmanned. However, out of 321, Gate Friends have been deployed at 127 unmanned crossings and still 194 gates are left where there is no Gate Friend posted so far where the persons while crossing must be conscious.
DRM said, Under the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 Section 131, every driver of a vehicle must check before passing the railway crossing as to whether any train is coming or not.
Despite erecting speed breakers on both sides of the unmanned crossing track could definitely minimize accidents and ‘STOP’ signboards cautioning the commuters on both sides of the crossing but nobody pays heed in a hurry, he added.
He said, a fraction of second’s decision can cause a major accident leading to death and the people must follow the rules while crossing the unmanned railway crossings.
It’s better late than never, DRM added.
