Teachers detained in Ferozepur before joining protest at Bahtinda for regularization of services
Ferozepur, October 23, 2016: Teacher members of the Shaheed Kiranjit Kaur EGS/AIE/STR Teachers Union moving towards Bahtinda for peaceful protest for regularization of their services, on their turn of agitation going for the last 15 days, were detained at Guruharsahai police station since morning.
Added here, the teachers hired under the employment guarantee scheme (EGS), alternative innovative education (AIE) and special trainer (STR) programme have been protesting for the last 15 days for regularization of services and merger with state education department.
Rajvinder Kaur, leader of the Shaheed Kiranjit Kaur EGS/AIE/STR Teachers Union giving this information said, the teachers had been serving in the primary schools of Punjab since 2003 at meager salaries.
She said three of their colleagues had got martyrdom during the course of their agitation. Apart from this, they had organized several ‘jail bharo andolan’ but the Punjab Government failed to regularize their services. Even a meeting with the Punjab CM did not yield any success.
She further said, today on a call from Bahtinda, the teachers of Ferozepur had a turn to sit on dharna and before reaching there, they were detained on the way. It looks that the government has lost its sleep from the agitations of the unions and even stopping the peaceful agitations by them.
Giving a warning to the government, she said, in the event of any untoward incident during the agitation, the statement government will be fully responsible for the same.
