SSF(Grewal) files complaint against comedian Bharti Singh for insensitive remarks against Sikh community
Ferozepur, May 16, 2022: Today, Sikh Students Federation (Grewal) led by Dilbagh Singh Virk, National General Secretary, and senior members submitted a memorandum to SSP Charanjit Singh Sohal, and demanded immediate action against comedian Bharti Singh’s indecent remarks on beard and moustache, in a reality show of which the video has gone viral on social media.
The Federation members demanded the immediate arrest of Bharti Singh for hurting the sentiments of Sikhs.
Virk said, the people are deliberately trying to make fun of the character of the Sikh community, while the Sikh youths follow the path of martyrs, to keep the country’s borders strong. He said, during the TV show, Bharti Singh has commented on the Sikh community by addressing another Sikh family in Rajasthan on the beard and moustache of Sikhs. It would have been better if the lady from Rajasthan could have pointed out there and then. It is very unfortunate that some artists target us for their own cheap publicity.
He said, Bharti Singh artist despite having his birthplace of Amritsar of Punjab and knowing all the Sikh history, is deliberately using derogatory language, which is not tolerable.
On Monday, May 16, Bharti Singh also took to social media to tender a public apology on the matter. In a video shared by the comedian, while speaking in Punjabi, Singh acknowledged that her language has been misinterpreted and misunderstood. Singh clarified that her joke had no connection to the Sikh community. She further apologised for unknowingly hurting the sentiments of many concluding that she will try to make Punjab proud.
Added here, Bharti Singh through a video on social media has tender apology for the incident. As stated by the comedian her joke on beards and moustaches was not directed toward any community. While poking fun Bharti Singh previously said, “Beard-mustache has many benefits, drink milk and put some of the beard in your mouth, it will taste nothing less than Seviyaan (a dessert)”. After her joke went viral on social media, many from the Sikh community have come forward to condemn Singh.
In the meantime, SGPC has also fined a complaint against Bharti Singh for insensitive remark against Sikh community.
