Security threat to Central Jail in Ferozepur
Ferozepur, January 2, 2017 : The Ferozepur Police have arrested one person identified as Kashmir Bittu son of Jogidner Singh resident of Mude falling under Mamdot sub-division on suspicion for throwing something near the back wall of Central Jail, posing a threat to the security of high profile prison which houses more than 1600 inmates including notorious criminals and gangsters against its capacity of 1300.
On search,, two bottles of illicit liquor and one bundle of ‘bidi’ was found from his possession. A case under Sections 61/1/14 of Excise Act 1952 and Prison Act 1894 at Police Station Ferozepur City.
The incident took place around 7 pm on the new years day on the back side of the Central Jail. Gurmail Singh has been appointed as appointed as Inquiry Officer in this case, who confirmed the arrest and the matter is still under investigation.
It is pertinent to mention that there are several old hosues situated on the north of the jail which is a matter is concern as from the top of certain houses, the activities in the jail could be watched. More-over, the statement government has recently auctioned the vacant land of around 11 acres of jail authorities through PUDA under the Optimum Utilization of Vacant Government Land by carving a residential housing colony and commercial establishments.
Added here, during February 2014, Rs.150 crore was sanctioned by the Punjab Government for relocation of Central Jail but the project could not be materialized even after identification of around 44 acres of land near Khai on Ferozepur-Fazilka road.
In the fact the idea behind transferring of land to PUDA and auctioning it was the entire jail premises would be relocated on the out skirts of the town but this proposal is still handing in abeyance. The sources said, certain funds have been released to renovate the existing building of the jail.
