SBS State University staff registers protest for non-payment of wages
Threatened to proceed on Pen-down strike again from March 14
Feroepur, March 13, 2024: The staff of Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University in Ferozepur have not been paid their wages for the past six months. In response, they held a gate rally and burned copies of the budget to protest against this issue.
The Joint Action Committee SBS State University Ferozepur members, including Dr Kulbhushan Agnihotri, President ECTA, Gurpreet Singh President, SWA, Dr Rakesh Kumar, General Secretary ECTA, and Satinder Kumar, General Secretary SWS expressed their concerns about the current situation. They stated that the current grant of Rs. 15 crore being released to the university is insufficient to run the institution, including paying the wages of the staff. Although the Punjab government had initially announced that they would double this grant, they later backed out from their decision. The University budget for the current year has also not seen any increase. The staff leaders demanded an early release of grant and expressed their disappointment that the teachers, who are considered nation builders, have not been paid their wages for the last six months.
They also highlighted the challenges faced by single-income families due to the lack of wages. The staff had earlier gone on a pen-down strike, but there had been no progress even after assurances from the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, Sushil Mittal, to solve this issue within a fortnight.
Consequently, the staff has decided to proceed on a pen-down strike from March 14. The staff leaders appealed to the government to release the wages regularly, given the importance of these days and the impact that the strike could have on studies.
