Ferozepur: 184 mobiles in 124 days from jail puts the focus back on lax security arrangements in prison
Ferozepur, May 6, 2024: The recovery of mobile and other devices along with banned items from inside the jail has once again put focus back on lax security arrangements in Ferozepur prison.
The recovery of banned items especially the mobiles to remain connected with the outer world, continued unabated from inside the jail. Around 183 mobiles have been recovered from the jail during the current year in 124 days including three today reported in the crime report.
As per the information, a surprise check was conducted on May 4 in the existing ‘chakian’ and one mobile with battery and SIM card was recovered from Luvpreet Singh under trial prisoner. Two more mobiles were recovered on May 5, during the routine round from the roof of block number 2 as unclaimed.
Added here, during January, 71 mobiles and SIM cards, batteries, headphones, chargers and data cables were seized. Similarly, in February, 35 mobiles with other banned electronic gadgets like headphone charge, data cables etc. were found. In March, there was the recovery of 49 mobiles and in April it was 25 mobiles. Not only this, there were 114 throws during the current year with a recovery of 26 mobiles. In January, it was 28 with 15 mobile recoveries, and in February 56 throws with 6 mobiles. However, there was no incident of throwing during April. There had also been chances of entry of banned items on reporting back by the prisoners on parole or during the visitation by family members. The entry of mobiles and other banned items sometime back on from the staff on duty for money cannot be ruled out.
Sometimes the mobiles recovered are costlier ones loaded with all applications which gave the inmates easy access to stay in touch with their associates and pass directions for illegal activities.
The jail campus has an open area from one side and the other side touching thickly populated areas touching the high-rising buildings are the safe points to throw packets over the high walls. There is a need to take the help of PEC or IIT to stop mobile use in jails
Meanwhile, a case has been registered for one under-trial prisoner and an unidentified person under the Prisons Act and further investigations are on.
