Railways to install environment-friendly Namma Toilets

Ferozepur, July 20, 2016:  On the foreign pattern, Indian Railways is ready to install Namma Toilets under the Swachh Bharat Campaign started by Prime Minister Narendera Modi and in the first phase,  these have been installed at Katra Railway Station, said Anuj Parkash, Divisional Rail Manager, Ferozepur Division, Ferozepur.

Anuj Parkash, DRM informed that these toilets are made of stainless steel body, being prepared by South based company – Namma with cost of Rs.17 lakh per toilet.

DRM informed that  two each sets have already been set up at Katra and Jammmu and two are being installed at Amritsar. Two more sets of toilets will be installed by the NGOs and one person will be engaged for its maintenance at a very normal fixed wages.  These toilets require a very small piece of land and in one such set, there is a provision of two urinals, one each toilet for male, female and disabled persons. Two sets of toilets are being installed at all these stations having bio-toilet provision which have been painted with a special coating that prevents bacterial growth and odour.

Giving the technologies of the toilets, he said, the fittings used are resistant to vandalism and tampering, and the corners and edges inside the toilets rounded to stop dirt from collecting.  The toilets are also accessible to the differently-abled. The modular design allows for expansion of the complex when needed. The design includes natural ventilation, solar panels and vandalism-resistant fittings.  The water used for flushing is treated on-site and recycled back into the system. The toilets have a capacity to cater to 300 to 400 people per day and are environment-friendly as they save water and convert human excreta into bio-gas, compost and fertiliser.
