Ferozepur, December 24, 2024: Despite stringent security measures at entry points and visitation areas, contraband smuggling into prisons continues to be a recurring challenge. In a recent search operation, authorities recovered eight mobile phones and 103 packets of tobacco, thrown into the jail premises by unidentified individuals.
Following the discovery, a case was registered under Sections 42 and 52A of the Prisons Act based on a complaint by the Assistant Superintendent. Investigating Officer Swarn Singh is probing the matter further.
The total number of mobiles recovered during the current year, including today’s 8 mobiles – 4 key-pads and 4 touch screens, is 473, besides other banned items. The month-wise recoveries of mobiles were 71 in January, 35 in February, 49 in March, 26 in April, 24 in May, 44 in June, 58 in July, 42 in August, 44 in September, 40 in October, and 26 in November and 8 in December. The latest seizures of 8 mobiles bring the total recovery of mobile phones from the prison in 2024 to 467, highlighting significant security lapses.
These breaches not only facilitate unauthorized communication between inmates and external networks but also risk enabling illegal activities orchestrated from within the prison.
Authorities emphasize the need for robust countermeasures to address this persistent issue. Suggested actions include implementing advanced screening technologies, enhancing surveillance, controlling visitation policies, restricting parole for offenders found with contraband, and adopting data-driven monitoring to identify smuggling patterns.
With such comprehensive strategies, officials aim to curb the entry of banned items and ensure the prison system fulfils its role in rehabilitation and public safety.
