One mobile seized from jail inmate, 7 mobiles, zarda and adopters from 16 packets thrown from outside
Ferozepur, February 12, 2023: During the routine checking in the barracks of the jail, one prisoner in high security zone tried to commit suicide by hitting his head with the iron grills. However, the alert staff foiled the bid of the inmate.
However, the vigilant jail staff during the patrolling at night as many as, 16 packets were thrown from outside the jail, by unidentified persons, in front of block number 2, on the back of bathrooms, were noticed by Warders Ram Kuldip Singh containing 7 mobiles, 212 sachets of ‘zarda’ tobacco, 2 adopters.
In another search by Nirmal Singh, Assistant Superintendent, one mobile was recovered from Dharminder Singh prisoner, lodged in high security zone one mobile was found with battery and SIM card, when he tried to come out of the security zone on arguing with the jail staff to commit suicide by hitting the head with the Iron Gate.
Recovery of mobiles from the jail despite tight security at the entry points – the most wanted banned item in the jail to remain in contact with the outside world to run the illegal affairs – is a common feature. At the same time smuggling in of mobiles or other banned items, by throwing packets over the high walls from the open back and surrounded by high rising buildings, has also been reported. During last year, 440 mobiles and during the current year, around 80 mobiles have been recovered so far. The involvement of jail staff cannot be ruled out as noticed in the post.
According to the jail officials, the process of installing jammers has been started from the jail headquarter side, for which the survey has been started. Jammer is such a new technology which blocks the frequency between the tower and mobile and it is one of the best options now. Such arrangements are likely to discourage the use of mobiles to run the affairs from inside the jail as so far the purpose of keeping the criminals away from the worldly affairs, as punishment, is lost.
Taking out the prisoners from jail on remand for investigation in such cases is also risky according to the jail officials. Meanwhile a case under Prisons Act has been registered against one prisoner and unidentified persons and further investigations are on with appointment of IOs.
