One licence, two guns: Deposit extra weapons, ADC asks owners

Ferozepur, January 19, 2021: Residents can no longer have more than two weapons on one arms licence.  Those in possession of more than two legal weapons should deposit the additional ones with the local police station or take permission from the arms licensing unit to sell the same immediately.

Before the amendment, the Arms Act allowed a person to own multiple weapons across three kinds of firearms on a single licence. The move is aimed at reducing the misuse of firearms.

Additional Deputy Commissioner, Rajdeep Kaur  said, the decision to deter people from possessing more than two arms on one licence was taken in the wake of a recent amendment to the Arms Act, 1959, by the Union home ministry.

As per the information, more than 300 ammunition license holders of the district have more than two weapons on their license whereas any license holder cannot keep more than two firearms on his ammunition license.  Still, around 200 license holders have yet to respond to the new orders.

ADC said, the licence holder must deposit their third weapon at the nearest police station/unit or with the authorized gun houses in Ferozepur immediately and also get it deleted from their licence.  She further said, the formalities with regard to sale or transfer of third weapon can be completed at the nearest Sewa Kendra for getting the NOC for sale before get it deleted from the valid licence.

Making it clear to the third weapon holder, she said, in case the license holder failed to deposit and get it deleted from his license, the required action, as per the law against the defaulter would be initiated including cancellation of the arms licence.  The army personnel can deposit the additional third weapon with the Army Unit.

The police authorities have separately directed the gun houses to make sufficient security arrangements for protection of weapons in the storerooms, installation of security alert system and CCTV cameras besides keeping the proper record of sold firearms to prevent any kind of untoward incident.
