Mobile smuggling in jail persists; 6 phones seized from 6 inmates

Ferozepur, April 5, 2025: Mobile phones remain the most sought-after contraband inside the jail, allowing inmates to stay connected with the outside world for both personal and illegal activities. Despite a three-layer security system, the smuggling of mobile devices into the prison continues unabated and the purpose of keeping the criminals behind the bars is lost.

The latest recovery is of 6 mobiles from 6 prisoners and two packets of ‘zarda’ during the search operation carried out by the Assistant Superintendent, Jail.

During the first three months of 2025, the total number of mobile seized are 215. In comparison, 510 mobile phones were recovered throughout 2024.

Among the prohibited items inside the jail for the prisoners, mobile phones are the most wanted gadgets to remain in touch with the outer world, even for illegal purposes.

All the six prisoners identified as Jaswinder Singh alias jassa, Mintu, Gulsan Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Sandeep Singh alias Kalu, Harjinder Singh alias Jindu alongwith unidentified persons have been booked under Prisons Act and further investigations are on with Raman Kumar, IO.

Experts suggest that only stringent security measures, strict visitation regulations, and denying parole to inmates caught with contraband can help mitigate this growing menace.
