Medical services shut for 24 hrs in protest against Kolkata rape-murder, local NGOs hold candle march
Ferozepur, August 17, 2024: Medical services in Ferozepur came to a halt today as both public and private hospitals closed their OPD windows for 24 hours, from 6 AM August 17 to 6 AM August 18. This action is a protest against the rape and murder of a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
In the evening, a candle march took place from Civil Hospital to Shaheed Udham Singh Chowk, with local citizens, NGOs, and various social and religious organizations showing their support. This march was held to honour the deceased female post-graduate trainee and to demand justice.
Dr Jatinder Kochhar, President of the IMA, alongside Dr Nikhil Gupta, General Secretary, condemned the brutal incident. They emphasized that this issue should be viewed beyond the medical profession, reflecting a broader societal concern for women’s safety. They criticized the current law and order situation, urging the government to ensure proper security and safety for women, particularly those in professional and educational settings.
The doctors also called for the enactment of a Central Protection Act to instil fear in potential offenders and ensure justice for such heinous crimes. They stressed that the working conditions should guarantee safety and security, and expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to the public while appreciating their support.
