May Day celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm, Unions condemn anti-labour policies of the government
Ferozepur, May 1, 2015: May Day also known as Labour Day was celebrated by various trade unions with zeal and enthusiasm in Ferozepur. All the trade unions condemned the anti-labour policies of the government.
It may be mentioned that in India, the first Labour Day or May Day was celebrated on May 1,1923 in Chennai on Marina Beach. Today, around India, Organizations and trade unions arrange pageants, children enter contests so that can understand the importance of fairness of workers and political leaders make speeches. It is celebraqted around 80 countires to mark the labour movement and workers’ rights which has its origins in the 1886 Haymarket Massacre in Chicago.
The red flag is now a symbol of the left movement and was used for the first time in India during this event too. A resolution was also passed that the government should declare May Day as a holiday.
Speaking on this occasion, Class IV employees leaders Samar Bahadur Chairman and others saluted to those who sacrificed their lives during the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago on this day.
Water Supply and Sanitation Employees also paid rich tributes to the martyrs of Chicago. State President Bhajan Singh Markhai said, the same problems are being faced by the labour class now for which the martyrs have sacrified their lives. He said, the labour class is being exploited through corruption, unemployement, discrimination, privatization, contractual system by not paying the wages according to the labour laws. Despite working for about 20 years, the workers have not been regularized.
Celebrating the day, Punjab Subordinate Services Federation celebrated the May Day in Civil Hospital led by District President, Ravinder Luthra by hoisting the flag. Later, he condemned the anti-labour policies of the government in strong words and appealed to unite to fight against to turn the tables in our favour.
Another celebration marked the day by the Northern Railway Men’s Union at the railway station under the tutelage of Com Subhash Sharma. The workers also remembered the sacrifices of martyrs in Chicago. He said, the anti-workers policies have put a great set back over the employment security of the workers. He said, the regular employment is only available in bureaucracy, police or army who keeps the labour class suppressed.
All the trade unions however, condemned the Moga bus incident in which the victim girl who was thrown out of the bus died and demanded rare of the rarest punishment.
All the May Day celebrations, a good number of employees and workers were present.
