Not only that, the shift from military targets to \u2018essential services\u2019 including \u2018weaponised starvation\u2019 seems to be a mindful strategy to terrorise the population\u2026victory at any cost! One may quote historical precedents and call it \u2018inevitability\u2019, but the truth lies closer to \u2018conscious Ichoice\u2019, where \u2018proportionality\u2019 is thrown to the wind. As it happens, the laws of war are often just paper constraints in the face of raw power, and war crimes prosecution- \u2018victor\u2019s justice!\u2019<\/p>\n

Existing data reveals a consistent decline in global peace over the last 17 years, and the ability to peacefully resolve conflicts even worse\u2026..at a 50 year low. Strangely enough, while active conflicts are at their highest since
\n1946, peacekeeping currently accounts for less than half of one percent of global military spending. Today, Dag Hammarskjold\u2019s famous quip that, \u2018the UN was not created to take mankind to heaven, but to save humanity
\nfrom hell\u2019, rings hollow for those facing hell!<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the very reason for which the veto power was granted to the P5, has become the achilles heel of the UN \u2026 the usage increase @ 240 percent in the last decade compared to 2006-2016, primarily on Gaza, Ukraine and Syria is a telling story\u2026..green signaling \u2018hell\u2019 on innocent population and collectively accounting for over a million dead.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, on 27 January 2026, the nuclear doomsday clock was moved to an unprecedented 85 seconds before midnight\u2026.the closest it has ever been since its inception in 1947; attributed to the \u2018increasingly aggressive,
\nadversarial and jingoistic mind-set by world powers.\u2019 Alexandra Bell, the President and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists sums it up as, the \u2018failure of leadership\u2019.<\/p>\n

Waging peace is fundamentally more difficult than fighting a war \u2026. potentially requiring the greatest sacrifice of all \u2026. one\u2019s core beliefs.
\nMoreover, peace propositions require customization to specific contexts, a
\n\u2018process\u2019 which cannot be \u2018cut and paste\u2019, unlike military\/war proposals \u2026. the difference between intangible trust and tangible metrics!<\/p>\n

Anyhow, whatever be the reason, peace advocacy does lack the oomph of war journalism and, is certainly not as photogenic as the latter. Often times, one wonders why the military theorists who yell and yelp about war, cannot
\nproduce the same decibel levels for peace\u2026\u2026maybe it requires \u2018more mind over matter\u2019\u2026.. or perhaps the fa\u00e7ade of \u2018militarised masculinity\u2019 separates the men from the boys! It is worth mentioning that peace is a biological necessity, not war, and as John Milton stated, \u2018peace hath her victories no less renowned than war\u2019!!<\/p>\n

Jingoism, frequently described as \u2018nationalism on steroids\u2019, is widely recognized to have peaked in the late 19th century buildup to WWI and
\nsurged, if not spiked, over the last decade\u2026the \u2018age of the strongman\u2019 as Gideon Rachman calls it! The new pathological strain of \u2018weaponised
\njingoism\u2019 revels in the \u2018othering\u2019 or \u2018us vs them\u2019 binary\u2019; a tool of political clout for \u2018internal scapegoating\u2019 and quenching imperialistic aspirations, under the guise of national security\/existential threat. Many such leaders
\ndot the horizon, though Trump is clearly in a league of his own; his public spat with the Pontiff and sacrilegious depiction as a Jesus like figure, points to a malignant narcissist with a \u2018messiah complex\u2019. Along the line, he
\nhas also dethroned Benito Mussolini as the \u2018most cartoonishly self obsessed and vapid egos in history\u2019\u2026. a \u2018peacemaker creating his own
\ntruth\u2019!!<\/p>\n

It is indeed a paradox that while humans @ Artemis II, the pinnacle of human potential, were finally seeing the \u2018dark side of the moon\u2019, they were simultaneously witnessing a \u2018dark side of human nature\u2019, threatening destruction of an entire civilization\u2026.blissful ignorance of the \u2018structure\u2019 of a modern\u00a0nation state vis a vis the \u2018soul\u2019 of an ancient civilization. Octavia E.
\nButler in her novel \u2018Parable of the Talents\u2019 had aptly remarked, \u2018choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought \u2026. to be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery, to be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies\u2026.\u2019 Those who fail to do so, are doomed to suffer the consequences, or as it is said, the \u2018cost\u2019 of a bad leader is rarely confined to a boardroom it eventually leaks out into the world we all live in! !<\/p>\n

The Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire in his book \u2018Pedagogy of the Oppressed\u2019 argues that because the oppressed have internalized the image of the oppressors, their initial aspiration is to become oppressors
\nthemselves. One may argue the context, but it does have a familiar ring to it, and it rings loudly! Not only in Gaza, in other conflict zones as well, it is increasingly a \u2018tragedy of human choice\u2019 \u2026\u2026if you can\u2019t change them, bomb them! Not only that, dehumanizing narratives have led to \u2018market apathy\u2019, where society is no longer moved by tragic news cycles, leading to a lack of
\nliquidity in humanitarian aid and, creating own rationale for \u2018guiltless\u2019 actions, \u2026.. hauntingly reminiscent of the Nazis labeling the Jews (!!) as
\n\u2018untermenschen\u2019 (sub human) to justify their genocide in the holocaust.<\/p>\n

The current global dynamics has unsettling similarities to the pre-WWI era. It would be prudent to recall that by 1918, the \u2018greatness trap\u2019 had led to the collapse of four empires, 20 million deaths, a global economy in ruins and
\nan inversion of their societies. Therein lies a lesson for the world! Lives when treated as disposable commodities in the pursuit of profit or power,society itself begins to erode. The human \u2018bear market\u2019 needs a societal
\nand ethical correction, involving strengthening human values, ensure accountability and implementing systemic changes to re-centre human dignity\u2026..that will be the true measure of our civilization!<\/p>\n

The eminent Indian poet and film lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi had a point in what he said over six decades back, \u2018jang to khud hi ek masla hai, jang kya maslon ka hal degi; khoon bahane se aman aata toh duniya kabse aaba dhoti.\u2019 (war itself is a problem; how can war solve problems; if bloodshed brought peace, the world would have been prosperous long ago). Amen!<\/p>\n
