Indefinite strike by GDSs hit post services in rural areas
Ferozepur, August 21, 2017: Postal services hit in the rural areas with proceeding of Gramin Dak Sevaks on an indefinite strike.
Gramin Dak Sevaks on a call from All India Gramin Sevak Union – AIGDSU – postal employees serving in the rural areas – in the branch post offices, who had proceeded on indefinite strike, led by Om Parkash, Divisional Secretary, stage a demonstration in front of the office of Superintendent Post Offices, Ferozepur, pressing for a charter of demands.
The demands of the GDS includes review of wage structure and service conditions in purview of the 7th Pay Commission, regularization of service and benefits on a par with regular employees and protesting the move to corporatize postal department.
Addressing the protesters, Om Parkash, Divisional secretary, Shagan Lal Upneja, Assistant Secretary said, the GDS generated around 60 per cent of the revenue of postal department, mobilizing small savings in rural areas but the government treated them with a step-motherly attitude, by ignoring the genuine demands of the GDSs.
They further said, the GDSs are being put on extra work of saving bank, five years term deposit scheme of rural postal, life insurance Sukaniya scheme, Beti Bachai, Beti Padhao, fixed deposit and various other financial related schemes matching the work load of regular employees but no special report has been presented with regard to special wages. The department has been obstacle to give report in favour of the GDSs than the government.
They said, around 75 per cent targets are completed by the GDSs from time to time. But now the GDSs have decided not to go ahead with completion of target of any scheme till such time their demands are not accepted and they will work only for distribution and collection of letters in the rural areas.
