In Ferozepur, 28,800 ltr ‘lahan’ recovered and destroyed to avoid its misuse
Ferozepur, September 4, 2023: During the special search operation was carried out, on Monday morning, jointly by the excise and police officials as per the directions by AC(Excise) and EO Ferozepur and 28,800 ltr ‘lahan’ was recovered from Habib Ke Pattn Sutlej River, Ferozepur City and destroyed on the spot at dry place, to avoid its misuse.
A close study reveals that the residents of the villages near Sutlej River don’t have much agricultural land, as on the one side is the international border touching the Pakistan boundary and on the other side is the Sutlej River. They don’t have many sources of income and have no choice except to do illicit liquor business as a source of income. Moreover, during the recent floods, the standing crop has been damaged and in the absence of compensation, this is the main source of income for them.
Divulging with details, EI Prabhjot Singh Virk said, every possible effort is being made to curb the menace of drugs and illegal extracting of liquor in the district. The teams of the Police department and Excise officials work in close coordination to effectively nail excise related crimes.
He said, during the raid, 28,800 ltr ‘lahan’, 16 tarpaulins used for storage, and 4 iron drums were recovered.
As per information, no arrest could be made as none was available at the place of recovery point. However, a case is reported to have been registered under the Excise Act and further investigations are on.
However, the excise department has reaffirmed that the drive to curb banned liquor will be continued in the future, and strict action would be initiated against any person found to be indulging in illicit liquor trading.
