Illegal poppy plantation busted in Ferozepur
Ferozepur, April 6, 2024: The Ferozepur police, under its drive against drugs and liquor, especially ahead of Lok Sabha elections, conducted a raid, on an input, and busted the illegal opium poppy plantation in the Arif Ke area and seized poppy pods which were planted as intercrop, on the back side of the house. One person was nabbed and booked under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Added here, the legal cultivation of opium poppy is done in selected areas notified by the Central government annually in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The Central Bureau of Narcotics issues licences for cultivation to selected farmers. In any other part of the country, opium poppy plantations are illegal.
The police official Jaswinder Singh said that during the patrolling, information was received that near the T-Point of Arif Ke, one Balveer Singh is cultivating poppy at the back of his house and based on the tip-off, during the raid by the police, 15 kg of green poppy plants were seized on the spot. A case has been registered and further investigations are underway, under the provisions of the NDPS Act.
