IDPD Criticizes IIT Mandi Director’s Misleading Comments on Heart Attacks
Ferozepur, August 12, 2024:
The Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) has strongly condemned recent remarks made by IIT Mandi Director Laxmidhar Behera, who claimed that a heart stops beating only when the soul, which he believes resides in the heart, departs. He further dismissed the concept of heart attacks as “nonsense” propagated by doctors.
IDPD has denounced Behera’s statements as unscientific and misleading, arguing that they undermine the fundamental principles of modern medical science, which is grounded in evidence-based research. The organization emphasized that notions like the soul leaving the heart are purely mythical and lack any scientific foundation.
Dr. Arun Mitra, President of IDPD, along with other key members, including General Secretary Dr. Shakeel ur Rahman, Central Council Member Dr. Indervir Gill, and Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Shakti Kumar Prabhakar, has demanded that Behera either retract his statement or step down as director. They also urged higher scientific bodies to take appropriate action, condemning Behera’s comments as an unacceptable attempt to regress society to medieval beliefs.
