Gym set-up row in Ferozepur : Youth Congress workers burn effigy at Distt. HQs in protest for denial of permission
Ferozepur, July 25, 2016: The Youth Congress workers throughout the state today burned effigy of Kamal Sharma, Punjab BJP President, Ashwani Grover, President Municipal Council at Udham Singh Chowk, in protest against the denial of installation of open gym in Municipal Park, Ferozepur City and incident of firing, brick pelting, tear gas shelling on July 22 outside the Municipal Officer over a clash between Congress and BJP workers.
In fact, Parminder Singh Pinky, Congress MLA after arranging funds from MPLAD account had already installed two open gyms in City and Cantt and third one was to be installed at Municipal Park for which the permission was denied on the plea that with the number of visitors, it will spoil the beauty of the park.
Added here, the Municipal Council executive body is represented by majority of Councilors of BJP party and only three MCs have no contribution in taking any decision.
In the incident on July 22, as many as 10 people were injured in the clash between Congress and BJP workers, when the youth congress workers had come in hundreds led by local Congress leaders – Parminder Singh Pinky Congress MLA and Chamkaur Singh Dhindsa, District President besides the visit of Amarpreet Singh Lali, State Youth Congress President when the situation aggravated and when the Congressmen tried to scale the barricades to reach the main gate of the MC office, to put a lock as announced by them earlier, BJP workers pelted with stones and bricks and Congressmen also strike back resulting in open air firing, tear gas shelling, exchanging of strong words etc. leaving the workers injured.
Not only this, Capt Amarinder Singh has said on the incident that Punjab police were overstretched and under staffed and engaged mostly in futile daylong VIP duties and the death of SSP Ferozepur Manminder Singh is also due to hectic day of combating a protest.
When Ashwani Grover, President, MC was contacted, he said, we have not received any fresh request from the Congress MLA for seeming permission for installation of open gym at some other place after its denial at MC Park. So far as today’s protest is concerned, Kamal Sharma, former State BJP President has nothing to do with it as it was unanimous decision to deny the permission for set-up of gym in MC Park.
Kamal Sharma was also tried to be contacted to know his version but he was out of reach.
