Ferozepur, May 18, 2021: Working on zero-tolerance policy and as a part of the crackdown on illicit/spurious liquor business the raids have been intensified since the hooch tragedy case of Amritsar and Tarn Taran and during the recent raid by the excise department force under the supervision of Excise Inspectors Gurbaksh Singh and SS Malhi, approximately 98,000 ltrs ‘lahan’ and 400 bottles of illicit liquor were recovered and destroyed on the spot being unclaimed, in the enclaves of river Sutlej in the surrounds of villages Alike, Chandiala and Chakar Da Betha.
However, the infrastructure like 49 tarpaulins, 21 iron drums 12 aluminum utensils, 2 rubber tubes along with 2 working stills were taken into custody.
The illicit liquor business, using ‘lahan’ (raw material for making liquor), has been going on in border areas for a long time. To check the illegal manufacture and sale of illicit liquor, the raids are conduced as a part of operations to control it, said excise official. The reason stated for why such illegal activities were being carried out mostly along the Sutlej, he said, villages are situated far away from residential areas and there was an easy availability of water as well. Destroying it on the spot on its recovery is to avoid any mishap on its misuse.
Earlier, during the month of May, 63,000 ltrs ‘lahan’ 500 bottles of illicit liquor was recovered whereas launching a crackdown against the bottlegging and smuggling of illicit liquor, during the month of April, 1,82,850 ltrs ‘lahan’ and 458 ltrs illicit liquor was recovered.
