DLSA helps person in custody perform mother’s last rites
Ferozepur, December 1, 2023: A person confined in Ferozepur Central jail was granted permission by the court to attend the last rites and ceremonies of his deceased mother, with the intervention of the District Legal Services Authority.
As per the instructions of Virinder Aggarwal, District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, Ekta Uppal, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, DLSA, a person confined in Ferozepur Central Jail was granted permission by the Naval Kumar, Additional Sessions Judge, Ferozepur to perform his mother’s last rites and other formalities after her death.
Ekta Uppal, CJM-cum-Secretary DLSA said that Panchayat members including some prominent persons of Village Tripal Ke, Amir Khas, Tehsil Jalalabad, District Fazilka approached her office and informed that a person of their village who is locked up in Central Jail, Ferozepur in a case, his mother has died today. It is essential to take that person in custody on leave for the funeral to perform the last rites and other rituals.
She said the villagers’ request and the person in jail were sent to the Court without any fee from the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System, Ferozepur, and the Court passed the final order allowing them to perform the last rites by joining the funeral. Thus, with this initiative of the DLSA, a person lodged in jail got the opportunity to complete his mother’s funeral and other last rites without any fee.
