Ferozepur, January 20: A debt ridden farmer belonging to village Karma in Ferozepur today ended his life.

India is an agrarian country with around 60% of its people depending directly or indirectly upon agriculture. Farmer suicides account for 11.2% of all suicides in India. Activists and scholars have offered a number of conflicting reasons for farmer suicides, such as monsoon failure, high debt burdens, genetically modified crops, government policies, public mental health, personal issues and family problems. There are also accusation of states fudging the data on farmer suicides.

In the instant case, the deceased has been identified as Harbans Singh (66) son of Bahal Singh. Added here that Harbans Singh was facing huge financial deficit since he had taken loan from banks and was unable to pay monthly installments.

As per the inputs available, Harbans Singh had taken his meal last night and went to sleep but when he didn’t get up in the morning, his son Nachhatar Singh tried to wake him up. But Harbans Singh had died due to the effect of the poison which he might had taken during the night.

The matter was reported to the police and later the body was sent for the postmortem.

Er. DPS Kharbanda, Deputy Commissioner, Ferozepur expressed his grief over the incident and met with the family members of the deceased. He however, assured them every possible help.
