Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide in Ferozepur

Ferozepur, July 3, 2017:  The debt-ridden farmer Gurdev Singh, 35 son of Dyal Singh of village Khachharwala in Mallanwala Sub-division committed suicide after consuming poisonous liquid.

In a report to the Mallanwala police, Paramjit Kaur wife of Gurdev Singh informed that his husband was agriculturist with only 3-4 acres of land and had taken a lona of Rs.11 lakh.  He was under depression being unable to repay the bank loan.

She further stated that on Sunday night he had gone to the fields and on coming back home he committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance without our notice.  He was, however, immediately rushed to the hospital in private vehicle.  On way, the ambulance with doctor met who declared him dead.

Sona Singh Inspector investigating into the incident said, the dead body of Gurdev Singh was handed over to the family members after post-mortem and further proceedings under Section 174 have been initiated.

Added here, it is the third suicide in the district in the recent past on account of tension due to heavy debt on the farmers.
