Such children are usually referred to bigger cities like Delhi for cochlear implant but now they can get the same advantage in the city. Anmol case is also a story of the struggle of a mother for her child against all odds.
Speaking to this correspondence, Raj Kumar Sathi, spokesperson of SPS Hospitals said, so far only five surgeries have been performed during the last four years. Normal expenditure involved is around Rs.5 lac for the surgery. The surgery can be performed well before five years of age.
The free surgeries are performed of the children from poor families as per the government scheme whose income is less than Rs.15,000.
He further said, there are only two authorized hospitals for the surgeries – Baba Farid Medical University of Health Sciences Faridkot and SPS Hospitals, Ludhiana.
Brief of the ADIP Scheme : this surgery can be done free of cost for poor patients under central Assistance to Disable Persons (ADIP) scheme as SPS Hospitals with Dr Rajeev Kapila as surgeon are empanelled under it. Cochlear implant should be done as early as possible in life for best results and Parents should understand this and not wait or delay the treatment once diagnosed, sooner the better.
1 in every 1000 new born is profoundly deaf, such is the grandiosity of this problem. The cochlear implant is the most significant technical advance in the treatment of hearing impairment since the development of the hearing aid around the turn of the century.
Designed to restore sense of hearing for Children or adults, who receive little or no benefit from hearing aids, there are high risk children who are more prone to develop hearing loss like: those with history of treatment in neonatal ICU for more than 48 hours, family history of childhood deafness, any history of neonatal jaundice, premature birth, meningitis (brain fever).
There are certain warning signs which the parents should note for early diagnosis, like look out if your child doesn’t respond to loud sounds, Blink in response to a bang, Wake up when there is sudden noise, Show any interest inn new sounds. Try to localize the sound by moving his head or eyes, Start speaking small words like mama, baba, dada, try to imitate words.
