All institutions must constitute Anti-sexual Harassment Committees :Bibi Johal

Ferozepur, May 12, 2015: All institutions should constitute Anti-sexual Harassment Committees to redress the grievances of any female employee, said Bibi Satwant Kaur Johal, Member Women Commission Punjab visited local Women Police Station, on Monday.

Bibi Johal had interaction with the Incharge Women Cell, Bohar Singh and Counseling members, expressed satisfaction over the working of the Women Cell.

Bibi Johal was appointed as member of Women Commission, Punjab on February 28, 2014. She is also Advisor of PNDT Act Committee.  Earlier she was General Secretary Shirmani Istri Wing and presently holding the status as Vice President.

Speaking to the media persons, Bibi Johal said, suffering in silence will only allow the cycle of abuses to continue.  Unless the anti-sexual harassment committees were made functional, the atrocities against women at work places could not be tackled effectively.

All institutions where female employees are working must constitute Anti-sexual Harassment Committee to redress their grievances if any.  The review meetings should also be held on regular basis, she added.

She further said, the Commission would be carrying out intensive crusades across the state in the coming months to create awareness among women on their rights to work to avoid facing sexual harassment either verbally or physically.

Condemning the Moga Orbit Bus molestation incident with teenager,  Bibi Johal said, there is need to restore the daily 10 minutes period in the educational institution of moral values which used to be a regular feature about 4-5 decades back.

Expressing concern over the increase of atrocities on women, she said, the social service organizations should also come forward to organize seminars in rural and urban areas from time to time to change the mind-set of the people.

By doing so, we can stop the social menace in the society to some extent, she added.

Expressing her hope, with these arrangements, Bibi Johal said, there will definitely be a creation of a health society.

Divulging with the details of the progress of the women cell during the year 2014, Bohar Singh Incharge Women Cell said, 84 per cent was the success rate in settling the marital dispute or general complaints from women.

In all 1225 complaints were received, out of which in 1039 cases a comprise was arranged through counseling.  However, 145 complaints were found false,cases were booked in 22 applications and 19 were carried forward.
