Alert Ferozepur Jail staff seized 20 mobiles and banned items in 4 Days
Ferozepur, July 15, 2024: Mobile phones have become a highly sought-after item among prisoners in Ferozepur Jail, often used to stay connected with the outside world and conduct illegal activities through threatening calls. With heavy recoveries loses the purpose of keeping criminals behind bars.
This year alone, 84 mobile phones have been confiscated by vigilant jail staff, along with other prohibited items such as chargers, data cables, headphones, pen drive, tobacco sachets, bidi bundles, and intoxicant powder.
In the past four days, a significant haul of banned items was recovered by the alter Jail staff, including:
- July 19: 5 mobile phones, 117 tobacco sachets, and 16 bidi bundles.
- July 22: 3 mobile phones and half a sachet of tobacco.
- A recent throw-over: 12 mobile phones, 9 chargers, 2 headphones, 75 tobacco sachets, and 11 bidi bundles.
Despite the staff’s efforts, around 150 packets containing mobiles and other contraband have been thrown over the high walls of the jail’s open area this year. To address this issue, security measures need to be intensified, particularly in the open areas and at entry points, especially after prisoner visitations.
A retired jail official suggested restricting visitations for prisoners found in possession of banned items.
Following a complaint from Assistant Superintendent Jasvir Singh, three prisoners—Prem Singh, Rahul Singh, Joginder Singh, and Amritpal Singh—along with unidentified individuals, have been booked under the Prisons Act. Investigating Officer Sarvan Singh has been assigned to the case.
