300 girls participate in International Day of Girls celebrated in Ferozepur
Ferozepur, October 11, 2022: To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl (IDG), the district level function was organised at Dev Samaj College of Education with more than 300 Girls participating in different events and expressing their thoughts
District Administration organised a number of events like Slogan Writing, Poster Making, Speech competition, Rangoli and Mehndi Competition to mark the celebration of 10 years of International Day of Girls. It is an International Observance Day declared by the United Nations and also called the Day of Girls. Deputy Commissioner Ferozepur, Amrit Singh and Sagar Setia, A.D.C. (G) graced the occasion with their presence.
International Day of the Girl Child is observed on October 11 to raise awareness about the importance and potential girls hold as the future of our society. The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.
This year, the theme chosen by UNICEF for the International Day of Girl Child is ‘Our Time Is Now — Our Rights, Our Future.’ “Girls are ready for a decade of acceleration forward.
District Administration took the step forward and opened Sukanya Samridhi Scheme account for around 24 girls and persuaded their parents to continue depositing their share of the instalment every year in their daughters’ accounts. 21 adolescent girls were presented with sewing machines by District Red Cross Society as an initiative to make these girls self-dependent and 8 girls/women who were in need of hearing aids were given the hearing aids.
Speaking about the event Amrit Singh IAS said that today we have organised a small event to promote the power and potential of girls and have given them the medium of expression by organising different competitions amongst them.
She said that there is a need to create a conducive environment for equal opportunities, well-being and safety of girls. Although in the past couple of years things have improved, still a lot needs to be done to bring these marginalized voices to the forefront especially in border districts like Ferozepur.
District Administration have always kept the issues related to women in the forefront be it health, nutrition, education, hygiene, employment opportunities and at the same time endeavour is being made to portray the positive stories of the women in the district.
In this event Ashwani Kumar, Rattandeep Sandhu, District Programme Officer Ferozepur, Chamkour Singh, D.E.O. (Secondary), Ashok Behal ,Secretary Red Cross Society, officials from Post Office, District Programme Office and Child Development Project Office Ferozepur were present.
