24 mobile phones, contraband items seized in Ferozepur Jail amid security breaches
Ferozepur, April 10, 2025: Despite stringent three-layer security systems in and around Ferozepur Jail, the smuggling of contraband items remains rampant, exposing serious lapses in enforcement.
In recent search operations, authorities confiscated 24 mobile phones, along with other prohibited items, including tobacco products and electronic accessories. The contraband was discovered in packets hurled over the jail’s high walls and from inmates’ possession during security sweeps.
Among the recovered items were – from outside the premises: 3 touchscreen mobile phones, 8 keypad mobile phones, 170 sachets of zarda, 7 packs of cigarettes, 12 bundles of bidis, 3 data cables, 1 headphone, 2 wireless earphones, and 2 clips and from inmates during a search: 5 touchscreen mobile phones, 8 keypad mobile phones, 3 data cables, 1 charger, 2 wireless earphones, 4 adapters, and 1 needle pin.
The contraband was traced to prisoners Atam Singh, Parbhjot Singh alias Harbhjot Singh, Mukhtiar Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Baljinder Singh, Sukhdev Singh, and an unidentified individual. A case has been registered under the Prisons Act, and Raman Kumar, Investigating Officer, is handling the inquiry.
During the first three months of 2025, the total number of mobiles seized are 215. In comparison, 510 mobile phones were recovered throughout 2024. Whereas, during April, this is the second recovery, making the total seizure of 30 mobiles and other banned items.
Effective countermeasures, such as enhanced surveillance, strict visitor regulations, and parole denial for inmates found with banned items, are crucial to addressing this growing menace.
