19 throw containing banned items over jail wall in Ferozepur
Ferozepur, February 10, 2024: As many as 19 throws in a single were found inside the jail premises, from unknown persons, over the high walls, despite tight security. Not only was this but in the past also, during the current 36 throws noticed with the recovery of banned items which looks to be the work of organized crime gangs.
Prison throw-overs involve people outside of the prison throwing packets over the prison walls that contain illegal items such as drugs, mobile phones and other contraband. These parcels are then picked up by the inmates.
According to the complaint filed by Jasbir Singh Assistant Superintendent with the police, in 19 throws, 250 packets of tobacco, 7 cigarette packs, 28 bundle ‘bidis’, 2 cigar pipes, and one filled soda bottle. During January 64 mobiles were seized and in February 10 mobiles were found in the jail from the inmates or lying unclaimed. Mobile phones are used inside prisons to facilitate organized crime on the outside as well as to intimidate witnesses and victims. The purpose of keeping criminals behind bars is lost when they remain in contact with the outside world.
Regular recovery of mobiles and other prohibited items from the jail speaks of weak security arrangements in and outside the jail premises. Need to tackle this issue, to give a strong message to the offenders in future.
