10 mobiles in 2 days seized from Ferozepur jail

Ferozepur, December 23, 2022:  With the regular recovery of mobiles and banned items from inside the jail, the idea of keeping the criminals away from the social contacts as punishment is lost.  During the past two days 10 mobiles – 7 mobiles, 36 sachets of ‘zarda’ and one pack of cigarette on Wednesday and 3 mobiles, 54 sachets of ‘zarda’ on Thursday have been recovered from near bathrooms the jail from the five packets thrown over the high walls.

2017:          87 mobiles, 620 tablets, 30 gm powder, 250 gm opium

2018:          35 mobiles, 750 tablets, 20 gm opium

2019:          70 mobiles, 555 tablets, 22 gm powder, 22 gm opium, 13.20 gm  heroin

2020:          130 mobiles, 675 tablets, 11gm powder, 30 gm opium, 1.7 gm heroin

2021:          265 mobiles, 160 tablets, 67 gm powder, 17 gm opium, 2.75 gm heroin

2022:          437 mobiles, 82.40 gm powder, 2.7 gm opium, 65 gm heroin and charas as on date.

Earlier, the jail officials have also been found to be involved in supplying the banned items to the inmates including one doctor, one deputy superintendent.  Not only this, an incident of inscribing ‘gangsters’ on the back of one of the inmate had also surfaced.  The connivance of staff cannot be ruled under these circumstances.

The high rising building around the jail premises and open area, have posed a security threat with the recovery of unclaimed banned items including mobiles, even from the high security zones, thrown from the outside.

Meanwhile, a case under Prisons Act is registered with appointment of IOs only with no further action as taking the custody of prisoners for investigation by the police is not free from security point of view.
